Design Engineering Expert

    Overview

The Stationary Cell – Design Engineering role leads product design, engineering validation, and industrialization of lithium‑ion cells for stationary applications (ESS/utility, C&I, residential). The focus is on robust electrochemical design, safety and reliability, cost competitiveness, and seamless manufacturability.

    Responsibilities and Duties

    • Own the cell product design (format selection, capacity class, voltage window, separator and electrolyte selection) for stationary applications.
    • Define electrode architecture (active materials, loading, porosity, thickness, density) and current collector specifications for long cycle life and high calendar life.
    • Establish electrochemical performance targets (capacity, DCIR, rate capability, cycle/calendar life, safety) and acceptance criteria.
    • Run design studies and DOE to optimize trade‑offs among energy density, life, safety, and cost; maintain design rules and golden parameters.
    • Develop design documentation (PFDs, DFMEA, CTQs, drawings, BOMs) and interface control documents.
    • Lead prototype builds and EVTs/DVTs/PVTs; plan test matrices, sample sizes, and statistical analysis of results.
    • Define formation/aging recipes and grading criteria aligned to stationary duty cycles and storage profiles.
    • Collaborate with Manufacturing Engineering to ensure design‑for‑manufacture (DFM), yield, and throughput on LFP/NMC lines.
    • Partner with Quality for APQP/PPAP deliverables; ensure IATF/ISO/BIS/IEC compliance for stationary cells.
    • Drive supplier qualification for materials (cathode/anode powders, binders, solvents, foils, separators, electrolytes) with incoming specs and change‑control.
    • Lead safety engineering (abuse tests, nail/overcharge/thermal ramp) and support BMS interface requirements.
    • Ensure cost targets via material selection, form factor optimization, and process simplification; maintain should‑cost models.
    • Manage engineering change (ECN/ECR), configuration control, and lifecycle management for released designs.
    • Coordinate customer qualification programs and technical responses; support field returns analysis and corrective actions.
    • Mentor design engineers and collaborate cross‑functionally with R&D, Process Technology, Operations, O&M, and Supply Chain.

    Basic Qualifications

    • B.Tech/M.Tech in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline
    • 12–18 years in lithium‑ion cell design engineering or advanced electrochemical product design.
    • Minimum 5 years designing cells for stationary/ESS applications with proven industrialization outcomes.
    • Hands‑on experience with APQP/PPAP, DFMEA/PFMEA, and validation testing for stationary duty cycles
    • Electrochemical modeling, electrode/mechanical stack design, and separator/electrolyte selection.
    • Design‑for‑manufacture (DFM), tolerance and stack‑up analysis, and CTQ/CTP control.
    • DOE/SPC, statistical analysis, and reliability engineering (life modeling, calendar/cycle life).
    • Safety engineering and standards familiarity (IEC, BIS, UL for ESS).
    • Strong documentation, cross‑functional collaboration, and vendor interface skills

    Role KPI

    • Achievement of performance targets (capacity, DCIR, cycle/calendar life) for stationary cells.
    • Design release on schedule with APQP/PPAP milestones met.
    • First‑pass yield and Cpk of CTQs at mass production.
    • Cost per kWh improvement through design optimization.
    • Safety/abuse test pass rates and incident‑free qualification.
    • Customer qualification success and reduced field returns..
