Overview
The Stationary Cell – Testing & Characterization role owns electrochemical and physical testing strategy, lab operations, data analytics, and qualification protocols for stationary battery cells. The role ensures reliable performance validation, robust statistical control, and full compliance with industry standards for energy storage applications.
Responsibilities and Duties
- Define test plans and acceptance criteria for capacity, DCIR, cycle life, calendar life, rate capability, and self‑discharge
- Own safety/abuse test protocols and coordination (overcharge, short‑circuit, thermal ramp, nail penetration, crush) for ESS compliance
- Set up and govern lab infrastructure (cyclers, EIS, temperature chambers, gas analysis, precision balances, thickness/porosity metrology)
- Implement SOPs, data integrity and traceability via LIMS/MES; ensure calibration and maintenance of test equipment
- Execute EVT/DVT/PVT builds and qualification; support APQP/PPAP deliverables with statistically sound sampling plans
- Analyze test data using SPC/DOE; publish dashboards and reports with Cpk/Cmk for CTQs and trend analysis across lots
- Lead root cause analysis and characterization for field returns and production deviations; recommend corrective actions to Design/Process teams
- Qualify materials (cathode/anode powders, separators, electrolytes, foils) with incoming specs and reference methods for PSD, BET, tap density, moisture
- Collaborate with Cell Design, Process Technology, Quality, and Production to link test outcomes to upstream/downstream improvements
- Ensure compliance with applicable standards for stationary cells (IEC/BIS/UL for ESS) and site EHS requirements
- Build and mentor a high‑performing lab team; conduct training on test methods, data integrity, and safety
Basic Qualifications
- B.Tech/M.Tech in Chemical Engineering, Materials Science, Mechanical Engineering, or related discipline
- 12–18 years in lithium‑ion cell testing & characterization or advanced electrochemical product validation
- Minimum 5 years focused on stationary/ESS duty cycles, life testing, and safety/abuse validation
- Demonstrated experience with APQP/PPAP, SPC/DOE, and qualification of new designs and process changes
- Electrochemical diagnostics (DCIR, capacity, EIS basics), life testing methodologies, and degradation analysis
- Statistical methods (SPC, DOE), sampling plans, capability analysis (Cpk/Cmk), and data visualization
- Test system selection, calibration, and automation; LIMS/MES integration and data governance
- Standards familiarity (IEC/BIS/UL for ESS), safety practices, and lab operations management
- Strong documentation, cross‑functional collaboration, and communication skills
Role KPI
- Completion of qualification test plans on schedule for stationary programs
- Cpk/Cmk of CTQs (capacity, DCIR, life metrics) within defined control limits
- Reduction in test‑identified defects and accelerated feedback loops to design/process teams
- Turnaround time for test reports and decision‑ready dashboards
- Audit compliance for lab systems (data integrity, calibration, SOP adherence)
- Successful APQP/PPAP milestones and customer/third‑party qualification pass rates.
